Navy scraps old ships

f.V Z. Press Assn—Copyright) WASHINGTON, July 8. The United States Navy is scrapping nearly 300 old carriers, cruisers and other ships in the first major reduction of its mothballed fleet since World War 11. Describing them as either worn-out or out-dated, the Navy said that the 291 ships being sold for scrap could no longer be economically utilised. Most were built more than 30 years ago to fight in World War II and the increasingly sophisticated missile systems, electronics and other advanced equipment were incompatible to such old ships, the Navy said. Their scrapping will leave 536 ships and smaller craft in the Navy’s reserve fleet. |
