Volunteers sought
The wheelchair ambulance run by the Canterbury branch of the Crippled Children Society urgently needs three more drivers. The driver of the ambulance is provided from a group of 16 volunteers, most of whom are responsible for one trip a week. However, three of these drivers have withdrawn for personal reasons. Mr P. A. Hickling, the secretary-manager of the society, said that he would be happy to hear from anyone interested in driving the vehicle. The ambulance has covered 23,000 miles since December, 1971. In a normal working week it travels between 250 and 300 miles, picking up seven children for the School for the Physically Handicapped in the morning, and an older group for the branch’s activities centre at midday, then returning the passengers home in the evening.
Gold Rush Festival An unusual cards contest, part of the mid-year Gold Rush Festival in Greymouth, attracted support at the week-end. Fifty-four pairs competed in a forty-fives tournament, the final being won by C. Bell and K. Griffiths, of Hokitika, from H. Westwood and C. Lee, of Greymouth.—(F.O.O.R.)
