Wins in badminton

Canterbury extended its proud record in the South Island interprovincial Division II badminton competition by beating Southland and Nelson in the Skellerup Hall on Saturday. With its victories in the zone elimination contests, Canterbury took a major step towards qualifying for its twelfth successive national final. Canterbury lost only two of j the 16 matches against Southland, but found a tougher opponent in Nelson. Although Nelson ' proved stronger in the women's section, the experienced Canterbury men continued their unbeaten run and gave the province a 10-6 win. 1 The third contest was won by Nelson which beat Southland by 11 matches to five. Otago is now Canterbury’s only stumbling block to qualifying for, another New Zealand final: against the top North Island, province for the R.S.L. Cup. The' two teams clash in Dunedin on August 3. and the encounter I should also decide the holder of the Pearce Cup. donated for the' winner of the South Island Division II competition. The Canterbury juniors beat; Nelson 13 matches to three in; a zone A elimination match of! the South Island Division IV competition for the Woolworths Cup. After losing to West Coast two weeks ago, the Canterbury junior team showed improved form. Canterbury’s third and final match is against South Canterbun- at Ashburton on August 3. The Canterbury Division II side lost the second women’s doubles and third mixed doubles matches against Southland. After winning the fi’-st game. Mrs N. Jacobs and Miss R. but won the match after two further hard-fought games. In the encounter against Nelson, the Canterbury women were lacking in experience and Nelson triumphed in three of the four singles matches and both the doubles games. Miss R. Smith gained the only singles win, against Mrs J. McGrath, in two straight games. The promising Miss Erickson did not put up the expected opposition to Nelson’s number one, Mrs J. Marshall, who is among the top 16 women in New Zealand. The heroes of Canterbury’s victories were the four men. W. I •Edgecumbe, E. Kirkland, C. Was-; ley and J. Anderson. Theydropped only two games in winning their singles matches, and were also unbeaten in the doubles matches. Edgecumbe, in particular, was in outstanding form. As the top player, the former Division I representative lost 16 points in his two singles matches comprising' four games. Tile men also came to the rescue in the mixed doubles matches when Canterbury looked in danger of losing to Nelson.
