Homosexual law view

Disillusionment with the “inaction” of the Government on homosexual law reform i has been expressed by the; president of the New Zealand University Student’s As-: sociation (Mr J. Crichton). The association was appalled by the recent state-; ments by the Prime Minister (Mr Kirk) suggesting that Government action on homosexual law reform would be prejudicial to the Labour Partv, Mr Crichton said. :

“The people of New Zealand have a right to expect ; their Government to be motiIvated by a desire to work in I the best interests of the Community, and not in the interests of their own party,” he said. The issue of homosexual law reform was another exiample of the inability of the (Government to come to grips [with social issues.

“Suggesting, as the Prime Minister has, that the campaign for homosexual law reform could best be furthered by another petition to Parliament on the subject is nothing short of “passing the buck.’

“It has been Labour Party policy for a number of years to reform the law relating to homosexual behaviour between consenting adult males, but the Parliamentary Labour Party, if recent events are any measure, lacks the gumption to act on that policy.”
