S.A. not to withdraw

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. South Africa does not intend to withdraw from this year’s Davis Cup competition. Mr B. Franklin, president of the South African Lawn Tennis Union, said. Discussing South Africa’s position in the competition, which will be one of the major items at the annual meeting of the Davis Cup nations this week. Mr Franklin said: “South Africa’s entry for 1974 was accepted after all the nations in the Davis Cup had been clearly warned of the consequences if they withdrew from any tie against us. “There can be no possible justification, on the ground of either principle or expend!ency, for South Africa to be asked to withdraw voluntarily from the 1974 competition, and we do not intend to do so.” Several of the European countries still left in the competition have said they will not play South Africa, whether in the zone final or the final itself.
