Election in Austria

Austrians go to the polls today to ’hoose a new President in an election which will sharply test the prestige o f the Chancellor (Dr Bruno Kreisky). The five million electors will vote directly for a new Head of State to succeed President Jonas, who died in office last April after fulfilling the President's duties for nine years. Final opinion polls showed a neck-and-neck race between the Socialist Party’s candidate, Dr Rudolf Kirchschlaeger, and the People’s Party nominee, Dr Alois Lugger.
