Ball Hut may be replaced

The Tourist Hotel Corporation plans to rebuild Ball Hut, 12 miles from Mount Cook village.

The corporation is interested in a more up-to-date refuge to replace the hut built 46 years ago. Concern was expressed recently that the hut was in danger of collapsing into a huge gully which has widened with the collapse of the moraine wall. The organisation which uses the hut most, Alpine Guides (Mount Cook), Ltd, says it is in no immediate' danger from this source. The company's managing director (Mr G. Wills) said yesterday that the main interest in rebuilding was to I provide better facilities for the increasing number of people who wanted to use the hut.

GULLY 250 FT AWAY The deep gully which had widened was still a good 250 ft away from the hut. Another 50 years might elapse before there was any threat, said Mr Wills.

The proposed new hut would be essentially on the same site, "and something worthy of its situation.” It would replace the corrugated iron building, which, although comfortable and sturdy, was outdated.

Ball Hut in the 1930 s was the headquarters of the first skifield .in New Zealand. It is owned by the Tourist Hotel ■Corporation, which owns half the shares in Alpine Guides, Ltd.
