Move to save cottage

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. A rumoured ‘ Government plan to buy 5| acres of Russell waterfront to prevent an apartment development has been confirmed by the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Watt). The Minister said that the Cabinet discussed the purchase last week. Negotiations would begin soon.

On the site, which was to be developed by the Pompallier Lodge Development Company, is historic Clendon Cottage’. The cottage was to be moved slightly to allow 24 ownership apartments to be built. The total cost of the project was $1.4 million.

The Minister said that efforts would be made to take the land under the compulsory purchase provisions of the Public Works Act If negotiations failed.
