University Council elections
Mrs E. Saunders, a former director of the Christchurch Marriage Guidance Council and now the national supervisor of casework for the National Society of Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, has been elected to the Council of the University of Canterbury.
She replaces Mr D. W. Bain, who was a chairman of the council and Chancellor of the university from 1954 to 1959. He has been a member of the council since 1947.
The Chancellor (Mr J. N. Matson) was re-elected to the council. Mrs Saunders and Mr Matson were two of seven candidates for the council standing for the District Court, of Convocation, a body made up of registered University of Canterbury graduates and staff members.
Mrs Saunders is the author of a book, “Adoption in New Zealand," and has worked as a' free lance journalist. She is also a broadcaster on current events and social issues, and in 1972 was the recipient of a Winston Churchill Fellowship.
She was the only woman candidate standing for election by the Court of Convocation. Dr P.. T. E. Baker was reelected to the council as the representative of Governing Bodies of Secondary Schools. Professor A. A. Conway, professor of American history, appointed to the University in 1967, was elected unopposed by the Professorial Board. He replaces Professor G. W. O. Woodward whose term expired this year. The lecturers’ represents-
tive, Dr J. C. Scrivener, did not seek re-election. He was replaced by Mr J. C. Thornton, a senior lecturer in philosphy and religious studies.
