DRIVE FOR TEACHERS
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 17. A big recruiting drive for primary and secondary school teachers was forecast by the Prime Minister (Mr Kirk) tonight after a Cabinet decision today. As many as 200 additional secondary school teachers will be engaged next year; there is also provision for the engagement of another 400 primary school teachers.
“This is the implementation of the one-to-20 ratio,” Mr Kirk said. “The Minister of Education (Mr Amos), who shepherded this scheme through the Cabinet, will report again later this year." In reply to questions, Mr Kirk said the teachers would be recruited from former teachers who had married and were available for reemployment, from retired teachers, and from people trained as teachers but who had gone into other avenues of employment. There would alsp be recruitment overseas.
