FROM STUD AND STABLE Two more stallions for Morwenstow Stud

From humble beginnings a few years ago Mr D. B. C. Allin’s Morwenstow Stud has been steadily developed into the biggest of its kind in the South Island if not in New Zealand.

With two recent purchases. Morwenstow wiii have seven stallions at service next spring.

The newcomers are Sabratel, the first son of Acropolis to come to New Zealand, and War Admiral, a winning son of the highly successful Kurdistan. Already in the line-up of stallions at the stud were the imported Greek God, Oribiter, and Keekerok the former New Zealand champion sprinter, Fountainhead, and Lautrec, a son of Knight’s Romance. Sabratel, an unraced four-vear-old, was conceived in England and foaled in Australia by the Doutelle mare Amidshfp. Amidship was an unraced daughter of Young Entry, winner of four races including the Lancashire Oaks, the Atlanta Stakes at Sand own Park and the Mornington Stakes at Ascot. Young Entry was by Foxhunter, a notable staying son of Foxlaw, out of Fail Venus, a Granby Stakes winner at Newmarket, by Fairway from Wings of Love which won the GranviHe Stakes at Ascot. This is also the family of the famours stayer Epigram, the St Leger winner SalmonTrout, and a long list ol other classic and cup winners. Acropolis, the sire of Sabratel, was by Donatello from Aurora by Hyperion, so an own-brother to Alycidon and half-brother to Agri c o 1 a and Borealis. THIRD IN DERBY Acropolis won seven races including the Voltigeur Stakes at three. He was second, beaten a head, in the King George VI and Quefcn Elizabeth Stakes, and was third in Phil Drake’s Derby. By the time he was put down, in 1970, he had sired the winners of 1644 races and $171,000. He also quickly established himself as a brood mare sire. One of his successful producers is Fran, dam ol Tudor Music, which won six races including the Gimcrack Stakes, and of Morwenstow’s young stallion Keekerok, ont of Ireland's top sprinters in 1970. War Admiral, the young Kurdistan horse bought b\ Mr Allin recently, belongs to

a Southland family which; has come up with many I winners, most of them in! the colours of Mr W. D.| McKenzie, in the last few! years. War Admiral, which won two races, is out of Warfare, winner of 14 races and 13 times placed from 53 starts for Mr McKenzie. Warfare’s victories included a Waltham Handicap at Riccarton. Her minor placings on that course included

seconds in the. Stewards and; the Great Easter. Warfare has also left; Warlight (by Freelight), win-; ner of nine races; War Ace (by Mystery), winner of four races in this, his first season; and War Flight (by Tromba) a winner in Southland in March. Other winners for the family have included the Invercargill Gold Cup winner Coorabin, Edinburgh, Piccolo, and Strategy.
