Half-back hero

(N.z. Press Association/ Aruga (three), M. Yoshida

PALMERSTON NORTH.

ftw'o), S. Fujiwara, Mori, Shukuzawa, and H. Akama, tries; G. Uneyama, three conversions. Massey-Victoria: Rollerson, R. Hawkins, Mourie, and Sayers, tries; H. Blair, a penalty goal; A. Innes, a conversion.

The tiny half-back, C. Shukuzawa, won the hearts of the crowd of 10,000 when All Japan beat a combined Victoria and Massey Universities team, 42-21, at Palmerston North yesterday.

Shukuzawa, whose bulletlike passes kept the Japanese backs on the attack for much of the game, left the field during the first half, blood streaming down his face from a cut. Within 10 minutes, after having two stitches inserted without the benefit of anaesthetic, Shukuzawa was back on the field and in the thick of play. T. Mori, in the mid-field, and the wings, K. Aruga, and S. Fujiwara, were in sparkling form, but the full-back, G. Uneyama, was off form with his kicking, missing nine of 12 kicks at goal. The Japanese locks, K. Si■bata and T. Erai, gained a 'considerable amount of linelout ball. The students entered into I the spirit of the game, spinning the bail among the backs. M. Savers, at fiveeighths, and the New Zealand junior, D. Rollerson. were prominent. The students were behind. 3-20, at half-time. They scored three tries in the last 10 minutes.

Scorers. —All Japan: K,
