Two table tennis teams unbeaten

Th* number of unbeaten teams In the A grade table tennis competition was whittled down to two after the fifth round of the winter series last evening. Two of the hitherto unbeaten teams, Selwyn and University, opposed each other, Selwyn winning, although the result was in doubt until the final stages. Ling Nan Ming, yet to concede a set from 15 matches, played his part for University, winning three singles and sharing in two doubles successes. But the Canterbury women representatives, Misses B. A. Taylor and P A. Marks, failed to achieve the necessary singles win. Both tried valiantly. Miss Marks dictated terms in the first set against V-’. T. Scott and won it well, but Scott regained the initiative in the next two games.

Miss Taylor played N. B. Radford. After losing the first set.' she gave Radford no chance in the second with a consistent! flow of forehand smashes, but' Radford forced her into error in the deciding game. The skills of W. D. Adamson! were to the fore as he and his club. United retained their unbeaten records. J. Armstrong mixed his play well to end G. P Rau’s run of success, but had no answer to the power of Adamson A. Alabaster also defended, stoically for Riccarton. beating, H H. Redmond in three sets; and taking a game off Rau. The second and third Avonside i teams had a close tussle before; Avonside H won the count-back: on games by the odd one in 29 J. Hanton continued his great; form for Avonside 111, but his three singles wins were negated . when Avonside II took all the : doubles. Avonside I dropped only two matches against Riccarton 11, but Uhe Riccarton funior. A. J- Arm[strong, fought tenaciously to keep L. A. Stewart at bay in the third set.
