Taxation of churches

Sir,—lt would be interesting to know how many socalled Christians among the Labour Party delegates voted in favour of taxing the churches. Are they so smug in their little ivory towers that they are unaware of the rehabilitation homes, shelters, hospitals, orphanages etc. that the churches are financing? Do they not see that, because of the increasing evils of today, the alcoholism, drug addiction, the sexual and marital permissiveness of our society, that these I works are becoming increasingly necessary? If the churches are compelled to hand them over to the Government, this will mean increased’ taxation for everyone to cover the cost which would be more than doubled without the churches’ voluntary workers. We used to be proud to be called a Christian country. Can we today? Christ said, “If you are not with me, you are against me.” Where do the delegates stand?—Yours etc., J.S. May 21, 1974.
