Sugar-relief plan
Now that his plan for importing sugar to the South Island to relieve the present shortage has been shelved because of the high price overseas, Mr T. K. Burke, the member of Parliament for Rangiora, thinks that a 3000-ton shipment should be obtained from the refinery in Auckland.
Mr Burke said yesterday that the Ministry of Trade and Industry would investigate the possibility of obtaining the sugar from the refinery, which is still allocating shipments on a restricted basis to the South Island. Mr Burke will discuss the proposed shipment with the Minister of Trade and Indus' try (Mr Freer) in Wellington todav.
A 3000-ton shipment would bridge the gap between the demand for sugar and the supplies reaching Christchurch, Mr Burke said. The refinery’s shipments to 'the South Island have been unable to keep up with demand since the end of last year, when production difficulties affected output.
