The New Zealander, O. Parun, was taken to three sets by F. McNair (United States) before winning his first-round match in the British hard-court tennis championships yesterday. Parun won, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Another New Zealander, J. Simpson, was eliminated by N. Spear (Jugoslavia), who took the match, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. A. Panatta (Italy), the defending champion, suffered a shock second-round defeat by the young Australian, P. Kronk. Panatta, who was told by Italian officials last week that he should abide by his entry for Bournemouth and I not compete in Hamburg, I was beaten 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, on ithe same court where a year :ago he won the title against I. Nastase (Rumania).
