Street-light request

The board’s practice of turning street lights off at 3 a.m. was under review and a relaxation might be possible, said the General Manager (Mr S. E. Slatter), at a meeting of the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board yesterday.

He was commenting on a request from the Canterbury Milk Vendors’ Association, which asked for a 5 a.m. turnoff. It w'as said that adequate street-lighting was essential for milk vendors.

Mr Slatter said that though there had been many “letters to rhe editor” on wasteful street lighting, the board had to tread a middle path in maintaining lights for security and to prevent accidents.

Cycle races.—The Papanui Cycling Club's application to hold cycle races in the Eyre County has been refused by the council. Complaints from residents have been received about cyclists blocking roads and of bad behaviour towards road users, the council said.
