Fire engine collision

A motorist was injured when his car and the fire brigade turntable ladder appliance collided at the corner of Tuam Street and Madras Street about 2.30 p.m. yesterday. Lionel Burt, aged 62, of 367 Withells Road, was taken by ambulance to Christchurch Hospital with injuries suffered when his car rebounded off the appliance, and hit a parked car.

His condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory.

A fireman hanging on to the outside of the ladder was treated at the scene for a cut on the hand.

The appliance was turning out to a false alarm at Christchurch Hospital when the accident occurred. A panel under the cab on the left side was cracked and splintered The front right side of the car was badly damaged.
