Rumours of Cabinet change in Uruguay
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MONTEVIDEO, May 21. Senior Uruguayan military officers are believed to be holding a meeting today after hours of contradictory rumours indicating imminent Government changes.
Cars normally used by high-ranking military staff were parked outside the Army Command headquarters in the centre of the capital at midnight.
Traffic was barred from around the base of the country’s biggest Army division, five miles from the city centre. Government House closed its doors - early last night and President Bordaberry did not stir from his official residence yesterday. There was complete official silence about the developments, but some of the rumours suggested that a shake-up in the Cabinet’s economic team was expected. Mr Bordaberry, elected in November, 1971, took office in March, 1972, and seized absolute power, dissolving
Congress and other institutions, with military support, in June last year.
