Chemistry fellowship
Sir Malcolm Burns was made an honorary fellow of the Institute of Chemistry last evening. The award was presented by Mr J. Pollard, a vicepresident of the institute, at a dinner given for Sir -Malcolm Burns by the institute’s Canterbury branch, of which Sir Malcolm Burns is a former president. The award is the institute’s highest, and has been bestowed on about 12 previous occasions. Sir Malcolm Bums, who retired earlier this year after being the principal of Lincoln College for more than 21 years, was awarded the fellowship because of his distinguished career as an administrator and because of his interest in soil sciences.
He graduated master of science from the University of New Zealand in 1932, then went to the University of Aberdeen to complete his doctorate of philosophy. He joined the teaching staff at Lincoln College in 1937 and remained there except for four years when he left to become director of the Fertiliser Manufacturers’ Research Association.
