Children to plant trees
About 300 schoolchildren would plant between 3000 and 4000 trees at Elizabeth Park, near the Sign of the Takahe, bn May 29, said the secretary of the Summit Road Scenic Society (Mr J. W. Jameson).
For the last 25 years, Christchurch school children had planted trees on Arbor Day, the first Wednesday in August, but bad weather had forced the new date, he said. The children, aged between about 10 and 12, had been selected from the St Albans, Gilberthorpe, Wainoni, and Somerfield Schools.
This year’s planting would further extend Christchurch scenic reserves with a great variety of trees and shrubs, said Mr Jameson. Shrubs had been specially selected for their suitability in the different environmental conditions of the area. A good example was berried trees, which should bring back native animals to the area, he said. The planting will be done under the direction of the City Council reserves department.
