P. Pocock, the England and Surrey off-spinner, wrecked Essex with four wickets for 27 runs in the John Player Sunday League cricket match at Chelmsford.
Surrey won by 16 runs. Pocock started with two wickets off successive balls in his first over, including the West Indies test player K. Boyce. Two West Indians, B. Kanhai and A. Kallicharran
propelled Warwickshire to an exciting 13-run win over Middlesex at Edgbaston, but Yorkshire, the runner-up last season, lost by six wickets to Glamorgan, which was given a 122-run start by A. Jones and R. Davis. Scores:—
At Northampton: Northamptonshire 98/9 (R. Virgin 53, P. Watts 61) beat Lancashire 139 (Mushtao 4/30) by 59 runs.
At Hull: Glamorgan 155/4 (A. Jones 74. R. Davis 50) beat Yorkshire 154/8 (D. Bairstow 50) by six wickets. At Chelmsford: Surrey 143 beat Essex 127/8 (R. Hardie 42; P. Pocock 4/27) bv 16 runs. At Bristol: Gloucestershire 162/8 . beat Derbyshire 161/6 (L. Rowe 71, J. Bolus 49 n. 0.) by two wickets.
At Edgbaston: Warwickshire 226/7 (A. Kililcharran 70, R. Kanhai 69) beat Middlesex 213 (C. Radley 55) by 13 runs. At Haunt on: Sussex 152/6 beat Somerset 148 (P. Denning 45; J. Snow 3/16, A. Greig 3/25) bv four wickets.
