Incentives in league
Players eligible for the Canterbury 19-years Rugby league team will have three incentives to perform well this season.
Not only will they be seeking positions in the provincial side for the national Rothmans tournament, but now they also have the chance of taking part in the curtain-raiser to the second test against Britain at the Show Grounds on August 4, and of earning a trip to Australia.
The Canterbury board of control decided at its meeting last evening that the 19-years team will oppose a South Island Universities selection in the preliminary game to the test match.
Approval was also given for 19 players, two managers (Messrs D. J. Alsop and R. F. Hamburger) and a coach (Mr W. J. Godfrey) to travel to New South Wales for a 10-day tour in late September. The squad will be hosted by the Penrith (Sydney) club and is expected to be involved in five matches at Sydney and Queanbeyan. Grading round.—A letter wasreceived from the Linwood club stating its dissatisfaction with the present Tavendale Cup and grading round system. It was decided to hold the matter over for a full consideration by the >oard later in the season Appeal.—An appeal by C. J. Brereton (Marist-Westem Suburbs) against the six-match suspension imposed on him earlier this month was declined. Coach.— Mr J. G. Clarke, the co-selector of the Canterbury A and B teams, was appointed coach of the Canterbury B side to meet Wellington B at the Show Grounds on June 8. It was also decided to play a full round of premiership games on that afternoon.
