Sir, —The two correspondents are two retired teachers who were taught to teach by the phonetics plus look and say method. Our Training College lecturers “had not yet achieved that level of understanding of the reading process,” Mr Doake has — so there was no problem. The fact that there is a difficulty now when there was none in the past, points to one thing only — children essentially are the same. The one thing that has changed is the method. Parents, lack o f books, television, emotional blocks have all been blamed but the lecturers who implement a method which has such widespread failure. That “level of understanding has not yet been
