Clubs still unbeaten

Christchurch and Russley golf clubs were still unbeaten after the fifth round of the Woodward Cup at Shirley yesterday, but Russley had to fight desperately for its win against Templeton.

Both leading teams have won their five matches, and while Christchurch demolished Waitikiri seven games to one yesterday, Russley inched home by five games to three.

Without four of its top players — B. C. Taylor, D. N. Turner, P. E. Hartstone, and E. H. M. Richards -a it was expected that Russley might be struggling to beat Templeton. This was the case, and it was in the gathering gloom last evening that J. M. Angus and T. M. Stout won their matches to keep Russley in with a chance of winning the cup for the eighth year in succession.

The honours were shared among the first six pairs to finish between these two clubs, and there were some surprising results among them.

A. K. Hynd and W. M. Strange, Nos 3 and 4 for

[Russley, both lost their matches by large margins to D. Houltham and J. Prebble respectively, and J. R. Broadhurst, playing at No 7, also lost by a large score. However, the games won by Russley were much closer, and with an ounce of luck Templeton might easily have forced a draw. Angus was 3 up playing the sixteenth and, after finding trouble with his tee shot, recovered to be putting from three metres for a birdie. His opponent R. Smith, recovered similarly well from a bunker, and had a putt of four metres. Angus missed his putt and Smith’s stopped one inch short, giving Russley its fourth game. T. M. Stout and his opponent, P. McHerron, were also putting for birdies at the sixteenth. McHerron narrowly missed his, which would have put him all square with two to play. At the seventeenth both players finished on the lip of the cup with putts of four metres. Stout won on the eighteenth to finish 2 up. Although Christchurch won by a large margin, four

iof its games were not completed until the seventeenth dhole and another finished at the sixteenth. It now has a [comfortable lead on games won. In the other games Rangiora and Avondale both had easy wins, the latter notching its first point at the expense of Harewood. 1 Points, with individual match points in parenthesis, are: | Christchurch 5 <35-5).
