TOW-AWAY THIEVES
Detectives suspect that a gang is stealing trailers in Christchurch. Eighteen trailers have been stolen in the city this year, compared with four during the whole of last year.
“There have been more trailers stolen so far this year than the total for the last
; four years,” Detective Serg- ■ eant A. E. Harris said yesterday. ' “Usually, there are more ! taken around Christmas, but we had nine reported missing last month.” The targets are usually good-quality steel trailers, parked at night outside houses, or lined up ready for hire behind garages. NAMES ON SIDE "Several of those stolen had the commercial name of the garage painted on the side,” said Detective Sergeant Harris. “They would have to be repainted if they were sold or kept for use. “It would appear that some fellows are taking the trailers, repainting them and selling them, or perhaps taking the wheels off them. “They are difficult to find again, but we are watching
trailer advertisements in the newspapers and checking other avenues of disposal.” Detective Sergeant Harris said that trailer owners could prevent theft by putting a lock and chain through the wheels at night.
One of the trailers stolen last month was carrying a load of concrete mix.
