Edgecumbe now top man in tennis
W. Edgecumbe has replaced S. Menzies at the top of the Canterbury men’s tennis ranking list, and the national champion, Mrs R. Hunt, at present overseas with the Federation Cup team, heads the women.
The lists were announced by the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association this week.
Menzies headed the rankings at the end of last season, but Edgecumbe was top of the Wilding Shield side this season. THOM THIRD B. Aldridge and A. James, who were third and fourth last season, did not play in ranking matches this season, so that W. Thom, who was fifth, has risen to third. R. Webster, who was fourth in the Wilding Shield team, is at No. 4, and P. Hampton, the New Zealand under-17 title-holder, has seventh place, an improvement of two from last season.
Mrs Hunt’s return to ranking has pushed Miss J. Phillips, top last season, into second place, but the women’s list has more notable changes after that;
The defection of Mrs D. McKinnel (3), Mrs J. Langford (4), Miss A. Meates (5), Mrs K. Graham (6), and Mrs C. Armitage (7) from last year’s rankings, has given the ladder a new look. RAPID PROMOTION Mrs S. Haig, the former Otago girl, playing for Canterbury for the first time, is third, and Miss C. Newton, the other member of the Nunneley Casket team, has jumped from tenth to fourth. Making a big leap forward with her is the under-17 player, Miss S. Chapman, who has gone from ninth to fifth. The ranking lists are.— Men.—Edgecumbe 1, Menzies 2, Thom 3, Webster 4, G. Harris 5, T. Mooney 6, Hampton 7, C. Brading 8 D. Howarth 9. S. Burns 10.
Women.— Mrs Hunt 1, Miss Phillips 2, Mrs Haig 3, Misses Newton 4, Chapman 5, S. Keddell 6, R. Smith 7, C. Moore 8, A. McMaster 9, A. McQueen 10.
