New title for male bowlers
A men’s national champion-of-champions bowls singles tournament is expected to begin next summer, with Wellington as the first venue. The secretary of the New Zealand Bowling Association (Mr G. H. Jolly) said yesterday that sponsorship had been arranged and only details of time and place bad to be settled. The event probably would be held, in rotation, in each of the four major centres — Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. All 22 bowling centres in New Zealand would be entitled to send a representative and the tournament would probably be time-limit games on a “sudden-death” basis.
Only five rounds would be necessary and these might be played on one day, Mr Jolly said. The event would probably be scheduled for a Saturday, with the Sunday in reserve.
He hoped it would be held in the second or third week-end in March of each year, by which time all centres should have found their singles pion - of - champions In Christchurch, this would mean a change to the usual programme in which the singles is the last of the three cham-pion-of-champions events played. The chairman of the Christchurch centre match committee (Mr J. A. Moloney) said yesterday that this would present no problems. In introducing the event, the N.Z.B.A. would be following an example set by the national women’s association. It has had such a fixture for many years.
