Christchurch has lead in squash

Christchurch I went into the lead of the A grade squash rackets competition with a decisive win over the Sumner side, which gave it the maximum of 10 points.

Christchurch II is in second place with 14, followed by High School Old Boys I with 12. Other points are: Burnside/Christ’s College 10, High School Old Boys II 2, Sumner 2, and University/ Christchurch 2.

In the women’s matches, Burnside beat Christchurch II bv 4 matches to 0 and Sumner accounted for High School Old Boys/Suburbs 3 matches to 1.

Although there were no upsets there were some good performances by less favoured players in the men’s competition.

L. Skurr (Sumner) looked at home in the top position playing against Christchurch I’s D. R. Preston. He took the initiative in most of the rallies and was unlucky not to win a game.

Preston failed to produce his form of last week, showing an unusual reluctance to volley, while Skurr rattled off some excellent cross court drives and volleyed crisply.

In an unusual match, M. D. Grant (University/Christchurchh came from match point down at 8-1 in the fourth game against L. C. Sparks (Burnside/Christ’s College) to win 9-0 in the fifth.

Out of the five games, four went to love and the total points scores were 28 to Grant and 26 to Sparks. The Christchurch 11, High School Old Boys I match rested on the match between the young junior, B. Matthews, and the experienced A. G. Anderson. Anderson went to a handy lead before Matthews increased the pace and showed great control of his serve in the last three games to score many outright points. Waving her first competitive

game of the season, Mrs R. Woodhead, the former South Island title-holder. shewed glimpses of her past form in taking a game from Burnside’s K Graham, but lacked the fitness to follow up her good driving. Miss R. Stanton out-drove Mrs M. Holland (Sumner), but appeared vulnerable when Mrs Holland volleyed from centre court.
