Oddfellows meet
Members of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand of the Independent Order of Oddfellows are meeting in Christchurch this week for the lodge’s forty-second biennial conference, and the installation of the grand master and grand lodge officers. Activities* began on Saturday evening with the installation of officers. On Sunday evening, members paraded to the Durham Street Methodist Church, where the Rev. I. Bailey preached the sermon. Yesterday, there was a social gathering in the Oddfellows Hall.
The grand master, Mr C. C. Benzoni, the grand sire, Mr H. A. Mackie, executive officers, and grand lodge representatives from 24 districts were welcomed by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr N. G. Pickering) at a Civic reception last evening. Today, visitors will go on a trip, returning for a social evening.
At 8 p.m. tomorrow, Mr Mackie, who is the grand sire of the Grand Lodge of Australasia, will install the grand master at a ceremony in the Town Hall.
