Communist amphibious tanks have made the first armoured assault on a Government posi-j lion in the Mekong delta, but they were driven off after one tank was destroyed. the Saigon Command said today. The Command spokesman -.aid that Communist troops, backed bv five PT-76 Sovietbuilt hght amphibious tanks, crossed from the area near the Cambodian border and attacked a Government outpost in the Plain of Reeds last night. The outpost. 56 miles ->rth-west of Saigon, called in artillery fire on the tanks! and reported one destroyed.' The other four apparently withdrew across the border under cover of darkness. Government amphibious armoured cars crossed rhe swampland to reinforce the cut post and drove off the attacking infantry. Two def’nders were killed and 12 Wounded. Communist losses were unknown.
