‘Extension studies site important’
A plea for the extension studies department of the University of Canterbury to remain at the town site of the university once the move to Ham has been completed next year has been made by the Environmental Vanguard Organisation.
The chairman of the organisation (Dr H. Hervey) said yesterday that it was difficult to understand why the university was so adamant that no department of the university should occupy any of the town site buildings in the future. The University of Canterbury Extension Studies Department was a very important adult education faculty and one way in which the university reached out into the community.
"In a central position the department would certainly be in close contact with the city and the community, a relationship which could well prove more tenuous on the Ham site. “We consider that the university is ignoring some very' important considI erations in this matter and : that it should be much more 'thoroughly investigated. We
feel that the needs and convenience of the community should be of first import ance as far as the extension studies department is concerned.” Use of some of the town site buildings bv the extension studies department would ensure the maintenance of the buildings concerned and would greatly assist the financial problem of the long-term maintenance of the whole complex, Dr Hervey said.
