W ESTPORT, April 22.

Westport and Nelson will be bases for a squid-catching, processing, and marketing project by the Fishing Industry Board, in association with Seaford Products. Ltd. the board has announced.

The general manager of the hoard (Mr .J. S. Campbell) said in Wellington that the fishing boat Leander would he used.

The Leander was owned by Mr B J. Kenton, of Ttmaru. the president of the Federation of Commercial Fishermen. <aid Mr Campbell. She had the necessary power generation, freezer capacity, and deck lay-out for squid fishing. Six Japanese automatic -quid-fishing macthnes. with < lu.oOO-watt lighting system have been mounted on the boat The area of ti-hing at first will be off the West Coast, and the vessel will be based at Nelson and Westport. If squid could be caught in adequate quantities and handled >atisfactoril> on the West Coast, consideration would be given, if good catches were being landed bv the Japanese vessels on

the east coast, to transferring the project there for a short period, said Mr Campbell.
