Road accidents at Easter this year showed a substantial reduction on the figures for last Easter, said the Minister of Transport (Sir Basil Arthur).
Fatalities were up — 17 compared with 16 — but provisional injury figures showed a 34 per cent drop. There were 102 serious injuries and 169 minor injuries, compared with 167 and 244. respectively, last year. Sir Basil Arthur said traffic officers detected 12431
(offences during the holiday: break. Of these, 8809 could: have led directly to accidents. The number of offences : detected compared with 10,483 last Easter. There were 255 offences j involving alcohol, and 58 i vehicles were ordered off the road for dangerous mechanijcal defects.
