Kingfishers
“The Private Life of The Kingfisher", an award-win-ning study of a brilliant bird, has become the most talked-about British wildlife film made since the war. Ronald and Rosemary Eastman filmed this, one of Ihe most intimate and detailed portraits ever made of a wild bird, with a thoroughness and ingenuity that rivals that of the Master, Heinz Sielmann, and his woodpecker film. The kingfisher’s rich hues make it an ideal subject for colour television. The bird's back is a dazzling cobail blue, its underparts a warm orange, and its feet sealingwax red. It is a dumpy bird about five inches tail hot its
aspect is dominated by a Isharp dagger-like bill. The most memorable pictures of this shy and secretive bird are of fishing under water, and the adult feeding its young inside the | nest burrow. Young Socialists.— The first meeting, outside of (Europe, of the International Union of Socialist Youth, opened in Hunua. near Papakura. at the week-end. Delegates from Chile. Israel. .Sweden, Germany. India and 'Singapore are attending with 50 New Zealanders until I May 3. Some of the delegates I will visit the South Island — P.A.
