MAGISTRATE'S COURT $100 fine imposed for bookmaking
John Howatt Ormond, aged 34, an unemployed driver (Mr M. J. Glue), was convicted and fined SlOO when he appeared before Mr P. L. Molineaux, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker on April 20. Ormond pleaded guilty. Senior Sergeant G. A. Clewer said that the defendant’s address was searched. While detectives were there the telephone rang twice and bets were placed. There was evidence of some organisation.
Ormond said he could not work because of a back injury and wanted to make some money. He had not been bookmaking for long. Mr Glue said that the defendant was keen on sport, but was unable to participate because of the serious injury. Because of the injury he had lost financially. DRUG CHARGE A man who admitted injecting himself with hard drugs for the last four vears was remanded on bail to April 29 for sentence on a charge of possessing a hypodermic syringe for using pethidine on March 29. An examination by two doctors was ordered. Paul Stephen Ludlow, aged 20. unemployed <Mr G. R. Lascelles). pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Clewer said that the syringe was found in the defendant’s room. He frankly admitted using it. “STREAKING” CHARGE Four voung men who ran from Hereford Street to the Cathedral and back in a "mass streak ’ were each fined $25 when they appeared on a joint charge of behaving in a disorderly manner. Robert Leland MacDonald, aged 20. a labourer. Richard Eric John Galilee, aged 20, a student. Graeme John Moore, aged 20. a cleaner, and Timothy Nicholas Lonsdale, aged 20, an architect, pleaded guilty to the cliarge. Senior-Sergeant Clewer said; that the defendants undressed; in a van parked in Hereford Street, and ran through the' Plaza Arcade into the Square wearing only their footwear. They told the police they had done it “for a laugh.” ASSAULT
Two brothers who pleaded Cuilty to a charge of assaulting another person in a hotel car park on December 1 were convicted and remanded on bail to April 30 for sentence. They are Ravmond John Luscombe, aged 27. a freezing worker, and lan Stanley Luscombe. aged 23, a machine operator (Mr G. R. Lascelles. for both).
Senior-Sergeant Clewer said that the complainant. David James Alleton. was sitting in the back of a car in the Shirley Lodge car park when the defendants attempted to drag him out. When this failed they punched him about tire face and head.
The complainant suffered cuts above an eye and ear which required hospital treatment. CANNABIS AND PIPE
Douglas James Buttle, aged 20. unemployed, was convicted and fined a total of $125 when he pleaded guilty to charges of possession of cannabis, and possession of a pipe for smoking cannabis.
Senior-Sergeant Clewer said that the defendant’s bag was searched on Februarv 24. and stalks and roots, identified as cannabis, were found. The de-
fendant also had a pipe, which he openly admitted making for himself to smoke cannabis. DRUG OFFENCES Murray James Edwards, aged 18. a hospital orderly (Mr G. R Lascellesl, was convicted and fined a total of $lOO when he pleaded guilty to charges of having cannabis and 32 tablets of prescription poisons in his possession on March 27. Mr Lascelles said that the quantity of cannabis was small 10.7 grams), and the tablets had been used to help him sleep. CANNABIS POSSESSION Nigel Barnes Davies, aged 22, a student, was convicted and fined $75 when he pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of cannabis. Senior-Sergeant Clewer said that the defendant’s Hat was searched and three matchboxes containing cannabis were found in a drawer. The defendant told the police he had forgotten he had it. There was no evidence of sale. For the defendant, Mr N. R. W. Davidson said that the cannabis was left at the flat by someone who had stayed there overnight. The defendant had forgotten about it, and there was no attempt to conceal it. BURGLARY
Neil William Newton, aged 17, a factory hand (Mr N. R. W. Davidson >, was placed on probation for two years when he was sentenced on a charge of
burgling the premises of Gollin; Sports, Ltd, on April 14. He had previously pleaded guilty. As special conditions of pro-' bation he was ordered to live and work where directed and; to undertake 60 hours of com-i munity work. RECEIVING On a charge of receiving a rug worth $11.95 on April 14 at Lyttelton knowing it had been dishonestly obtained, Richard lan Pycroft. aged 22, a barman, was convicted and fined $75. He pleaded guilty. EXCESSIVE BLOOD-ALCOHOL i John McCallum Lowry, aged 18. a shoemaker, was convicted and fined $2OO and disqualified from driving for 18 months when he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with excessive bloodalcohol (205mg>. Russell Stewart Carter, aged 23. a driver, was convicted and fined $l5O and disoualified from driving for 12 months from May 6 when he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with excessive blood-alcohol ilB7mg>. ! Jack Kenneth Johnson, aged 23. a butcher, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with an excessive blood-alcohol concentration (239 mg on January 16. He was convicted and fined $2OO and disqualified from driving for 18 months.
