Nixon: tapes rumour
■ (N.Z.PA.-Reuter—Copyright)
WASHINGTON, April 22.
President sixon and Congress are both back in Washington today to
set the stage for what could be a confrontation over the heated issue of a subpoena for the White House Watergate tapes. The Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives issued a subpoena for
. tapes of 42 conversations for i its investigation on impeach'ment after the President refused to rurn them over to the committee voluntarily.
president Nixon has until ■ Thursday to answer the subI poena.
i He has not announced ■ whether he will comply, but 'word has been put out that the White House may edit some of the tapes or transcribe them or release only some of them. This rumour was apparently released to gauge the reaction to such a decision. The reaction was not good with the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, (Mr Peter Rodino (Democrat, New Jersey) saying that anything short of full compliance would of itself be grounds for the impeachment of the President.
Congress reconvened ! today after an Easter recess, ■during which its members 'assessed the public’s thinking on the White House scandal.
