Nurses’ work

I <N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) SYDNEY. The New South Wales Health Commission is seriously considering training nurses to take . over some duties now performed by junior resident doctors. One commissioner, Dr W. A. Barclay, said that nurses trained to be “physicians’ assistants” might be one answer to the shortage of resident doctors in many public hospitals. The shortage came to a head with an unprecedented meeting of residents at Liverpool District Hospital to protest about the position in I their hospital.

The 17 residents at the meeting demanded an answer about understaffing at the hospital, which they claim is prejudicing patient care.

The residents, through their industrial organisation, the Public Service Association of New South Wales have already called on the commission to provide 11 additional resident doctors for the hospital.
