A methodical R. Laver quickly disposed of the New Zealander, O. Parun, 6-3, 6-1, and the young Swede, B. Borg, beat E. Dibbs (United States), 6-3. 6-1, to reach the final of the River Oaks tennis tournament, United Press International reported.

Laver needed only 45 minutes to defeat Parun and win his fourteenth successive World Championship of Tennis match.

Laver, already assured of a place in the W.C.T. finals in Dallas, continually blasted shots past the over-aggres-sive Parun when the New Zealander went to the net. He broke Parun’s service twice in the first set and four times in the second. Parun had reached the semi-finals with a fine win over the American. A. Ashe, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Borg, aged 17, stayed back

and forced Dibbs into making mistakes at the baseline. The Florida player could not keep up with Borg’s long-reaching cross-court shots. UNSEEDED RHODESIAN The semi-finalists in the W.C.T. tournament at Johannesburg include the unseeded Rhodesian, A. Pattison. He beat F. McMillan (South Africa), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The other quarter-finals resulted: C. Drysdale (South Africa) beat D. Joubert (South Africa), 6-0, 6-1; T. Gorman (United States) beat B. Mitton (South Africa), 6-4, 7-6; J. Alexander (Australia) beat J. Yuill (South Africa), 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. AUSTRALIAN UPSET The Australian, Miss K. Melville, upset her countrywoman, Miss E. Goolagong, and qualified to meet the topseeded Miss C. Evert (United States) in a women’s professional tournament at St Petersburg, Florida. Miss Evert beat the West German, Miss H. Mastoff, 6-1, 6-1. The 26-year-old Miss Melville had Miss Goolagong at set point six times before winning the first set. She won the match 7-5, 6-4. AMERICAN FINAL The fifth seeded R. Stockton upset the second seeded S. Smith, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, in the semifinals of the W.C.T. tournament at Charlotte, North Carolina, and joined another American, J. Borowiak, in the final. Borowiak, seeded eight, defeated ,J. Filiol (Chile), 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, after reaching tile semifinals with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over the Australian, J, Newcombe, who had won the tour’s last two tournaments, and five of tlie last seven. DAVIS CUP PLAY Scores in Davis Cup matches were: Japan beat South Vietnam, 3-0; Finland beat. Turkey, 3-0; Norway led Iran, 2-1; Egypt led Bulgaria, 2-1; Denmark led Monaco, 2-1; Poland and Hungary, level at 1-1,

Ice hockey.— The Soviet Union retained the world ice hockey title when it beat Sweden, 3-1, in the Group A championship in Helsinki. The win removed tjie last chance of Czechoslovakia overhauling the Russians.
