Torture in Portugal alleged

The exiled leader of the Portuguese Socialist Party. Mr Mario Soares, claims that several members of the Leftwing opposition, arrested in Portugal last week, have been tortured.
Mr Soares, who is 49, said in an interview in Paris lyesterday that he had proof 'of torture being used against [several intellectuals who were sent to prison outside Lisbon last week.
‘‘Mr Lino de Carvalho, a leading member of the executive committee of the self-styled Democratic Electoral Committee, which ran the election campaign in October last year, was tortured immediately after his arrest five days ago,” said Mr Soares. He added: “Mr Carvalho was prevented from sleeping for four days running and collapsed. He is now in the psychiatric unit of the prison where he is held.”
Mr Soares said that many political detainees have been maltreated by the authorities. He said that the wave of arrests showed that tension was still high in Portugal since the dismissal last 'month of General Antonio ide Spinola as Deputy Chief of the General Staff.
