Cattle society post

A man whose roots are firmly set in the farming industry has taken over the position of New Zealand secretary of the Simmental Cattle Breeders’ Society of New Zealand.

He is Mr I. S. Johnstone, whose father Mr T. S. Johnstone had Erewhon station in the Mid-Canterbury high country for some 14 years and whose grandfather, also Mr T. S. Johnstone, had Erewhon among a number of other properties including Manuka Point and the Hossack. Mr Johnstone has taken over from Mr H. M. Studholme, former secretarymanager of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, who will be continuing to work for the society part time. Born in Christchurch, Mr Johnstone was educated at Medbury Preparatory School and Christ’s College before going home to join his father who was then in charge of development of country for rehabilitation settlement in the Marlborough area for the Lands and Survey Department. Mr Johnstone subsequently gathered experience with cattle as well as sheep as a shepherd and high country musterer in both islands and before joining Shell Oil New Zealand, Ltd, in Christchurch 17

MR JOHNSTONE years ago he was for about two years assistant manager of Chaytor and Company’s Marshlands station at Spring Creek near Blenheim. After initial training with Shell Mr Johnstone became an area representative in Mid-Canterbury where he remained for about four years and a half dealing mainly with farmers. After about two years with the company in Wellington in various marketing positions he returned to Christchurch where has has since been in the marketing division concerned mainly with agricultural chemicals and the rural trade. Mr Johnstone has now become secretary of a rapidly growing cattle breed society with some 450 mem-

bers from North Cape to Bluff. It has also recently shifted its headquarters to Christchurch International Airport close to the Charolais Society and also GEMCO. A married man with three young sons, Mr Johnstone is interested in fishing and ski-ing and has served a three-year term on the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation’s southern region advisory committee, and for four years was chairman of the Elmwood primary school committee.
