Farmers fear severe winter
If North Canterbury had a severe winter, the feed situation could deteriorate rapidly, said the chairman of the agriculture section executive of North Canterbury Federated Farmers (Mr N. Q. Wright) yesterday. Although feed growth in the last month had been the best for a long time, supplies of supplementary feed had not improved in spite of a limited amount of hay, said Mr Wright. Farmers would have to rely on very mediocre supplies of hay to supplement feed growth to get through the winter.
Farmers were not getting > any satisfaction in trying to ( get improved fertiliser sup- | plies, said Mr Wright. The > fertiliser works was ham- . pered by stoppages last . month and there was a i shortage of raw materials. Unless farmers received fertiliser soon, no autumn wheat would be sown, said a member of the Federated 1 Farmers section. ! The section decided to ask • Kempthorne Prosser and I Company to give priority to ' farmers requiring bagged • super phosphate for autumn drilling of agricultural crops. > The company will also be ■ requested to consider an : allocation system based on j last year s usage for supplying fertiliser to farmers
