New stud for North Otago
A thoroughbred stud will be established in North Otago within the next few weeks and next spring will stand the New Zealand Derby winner, Pep, and Hie imported three-year-old. Matins. The stud will be run by Mr P. J. O’Brien, who last week bought a property of 170 acres south of Oamaru. Mr O’Brien established the Huntonleigh Lodge near Christchurch to stand Follow Suit and Pep, and after the death of Follow Suit made continued efforts to secure a second horse overseas. Matins arrived from England in good condition last week. He is an unraced son of the St Leger winner, Alcide, sire also of the highly successful sires, Oncidiunt and Gate Keeper. Matatina, the dam of Matins, won five races and £13.806 and was twice voted “British Sprinter of the Year.” Matatina is a half-sister by Grey Sovereign to the highlysuccessful sire, ' Showdown, whose daughter. Tontonan, won the Australian Jockey Club Doncaster Handicap last Saturday.
