More diesel locos

WELLINGTON, April 17. The Railways would call tenders for 34 high-powered diesel-electric locomotives, said the Acting Minister of Railways (Mr Douglas) today.
“Forecasts of traffic growth during the next few years have shown that this number will be necessary if the railways are to cope with future demands,” Mr Douglas said. “The recent unprecedented growth in the tonnage of goods carried by rail makes the acquisition of more locomotive power an urgent matter.”
