Lifeboat puts out

The Sumner lifeboat Rescue 111 put to sea on Saturday evening after the pilot of an N.A.C. aircraft reported seeing a ship on fire about 30 miles north of Christchurch. The lifeboat was launched at 5.30 p.m., and was about 10 miles out when it was decided there was not enough information about the ship to warrant its going any further.

The police believe the ship might have been a Russian vessel burning off whale blubber.
