Contact with countries eligible to compete in a proposed Pacific Bowl swimming carnival in Christchurch next year will be one of the chief tasks of the manager of the New Zealand M- Pl Duckmanton', which left on Saturday to compete in Britain and Europe Mr Duckmanton ‘aid there were 27 countries which could attend the carnival, and he would approach as mans- of these as possible at the Coca-Cola International carnival at Leeds over Easter.
A recommendation on the tournament will be put to the council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association tomorrow evening, and Mr Duckmanton said he was hopeful the council would approve the scheme.
Tt would provide much needed competition for our swimmers, and we would like to see it become a regular event, gaining the status which the Coca-Cola and Santa Clara carnivals have now.” he added.
“By bringing swimmers of great oualitv to New Zealand, we would expose more than our top swimmers to world-class competition.”
Canada, the United States. Australia, Japan and Russia would be eligible to send teams to the tournament.
Of the present tour, Mr Duck manton said that the team of four—J. W. Coutts. M. F. Tre' fers. and Misses S. J. Hunter and J. M. Parkhouse—had proved their capabilities at the Commonwealth Games, and this would be an advantage to them They knew thev were able to comnete with the best in the world.
