Korea Society formed
A society with the avowed intention of supporting, by all means possible, the North Korean proposals for the unification of North and South Korea was formed in Christchurch last evening. To be known as the New Zealand-Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Society, it has the 20 foundation members who attend last evening’s inaugural meeting — the second such meeting. The first was abandoned for lack of a predetermined quorum. The sponsor of the meeting. and now secretary of the society (Mr W. Rosenberg) said that those present were members of the trade-union movement, the New Zealand University Students’ Association, and the New Zealand Christian Movement.
Eight persons prominent in these fields were elected from the meeting as officers of the new society. They are: President, Mr W. E. Wilmott; vice-president, Mr G. McArthur; secretary, Mr Rosenberg; committee, Messrs J. F. Bishop, T. M. A. Hooper, M. Horton. S. J. Payne and G. G. Walker.
Other aims of the society, as laid down in the constitution adopted last evening include "the promotion of mutual understanding; the furthering of diplomatic, cultural, and trade relations between New Zealand and North Korea: and the admission of a unified Korea to the United Nations.”
Action on a proposal that a North Korean delegation visit New Zealand and on a nroposed exhibition of Korean art and industry, was left to the committee.
