On a pitch which played perfectly into the hands of the legspinner, J. C. Alabaster, Southland accounted for the Hutt Valley challenge in only nine hours of cricket and gained an eight-wicket win in the Hawke Cup at the week-end.
Alabaster had a match analysis of 12 wickets for 52 runs.
Scores: Auckland 139 (G. Newdick 5/30) and 56/2, Hutt Valley 128 18. Middleton 52; J. Alabaster 6/23, G. Alabaster 3/36) and 66 (J. Alabaster 6/29, G. Alabaster 3/21).
