Brighton does it again
New Brighton proved superior to Christchurch United for the second time in two days when it beat the national league champion, 1-0, at Rangers Park yesterday. Although this Ballins tournament final was played tn less tension than Saturday’s free-for-all, two more players had their names taken, both of Brighton— K. Mulgrew, for the second time, and R. Almond. The only goal came midway through the first half and was a frightening experience for United’s New Zealand goalkeeper, P. Dando. He waited for a gentle lob from Mulgrew to bounce into his hands; instead, the ball shot along the ground and under his body.
Once again, Brighton produced the more open, aggressive football, and although under mere pressure than on Saturday from the United forwards, had a safe and spectacular goal-keeper in O, Nuttridge to keep its IM per cent record for the season intact. United’s wish to play precision football was upset time and again by Brighton’s quick, solid tackling, and the team’s one-clear-cut chance was ruled out by a linesman after the referee had awarded a goal. F. Madrussan raced through to ensure a shot from K. Doornenbal would enter the net, and was ruled off-side. Both sides had to make changes from Saturday’s team and one of yesterday’s big successes was G. Storer at centrehalf. W. Arney, for United, did some fine work in the midfield.
