Fuel for N.Z. jets

Air New Zealand has been granted permission by the Civil Aviation Division to use JP4 fuel in its jet aircraft at overseas airports if its normal aviation kerosene (Avtur) is not available. The airline had not yet used JP4, a spokesman said. The controversial JP4 fuel is more volatile in an emergency situation — such as a crash landing — than the usual aviation kerosene. However, JP4 has always been used by the United States domestic airlines and by a number of international airlines. In recent months, more and more airlines- have had to switch to JP4 fuel because of a shortage of the: normal Avtur, brought on by I the world fuel crisis.
